Stress is over, but your gut still feels bad. Here's what to change first
When the stressful period ends but the sensitivity or unpredictable digestion doesn't
The deadline passed, and you'd managed to meet it.
After that, work calmed down a bit and you're sleeping better.
But your gut still seems to be living in 3 weeks ago.
Foods that were fine before are now still hard to handle, digestion is all over the place, or you can only eat tiny amounts before your stomach feels like it's turned into a rock.
The confusing part is your diet has barely changed.
So you start questioning the food. Too much fibre? Not enough fibre? Do you need probiotics now?
The stressful period has ended, but the digestive symptoms haven't.
Before changing everything I'd remember there is a plausible reason:
Your gut and your routine may not reset at exactly the same speed as your stress levels.
Stress can change how your gut behaves
Human research supports a connection between psychological stress and digestive symptoms.
(Most of the direct human research here comes from people with IBS, so we shouldn't assume everyone has the same underlying problem.)
But the research patterns are interesting.
In this year-long study, stressful weeks (sometimes up to a few months), were followed by digestion and gut problems for up to 3 months following.
Another study found stress changed gut-specific nervous-system activity in everyone involved. While normalisation appeared slower in the IBS group.
This means feeling calmer and having a calmer gut aren't necessarity simultaneous events.
But the good news is:
- This doesn't mean stress has permanently changed your digestion,
- Gut sensitivity can settle again once your sleep, daily work routine and eating routine have been more stable for longer,
- A calmer, more consistent week of eating can make it easier to see what your gut tolerates right now.
Your meal routine has likely suffered during stress
Even if you've been eating mostly the same foods, your eating patterns and routines had likely suffered a bit.
Maybe most days you pushed back your meals, ate too fast, or ate barely anything during the day and then had a huge dinner.
Maybe you experienced stress overeating, or kept waking up at 3 am most nights craving cheese crackers.
Or maybe you wanted to help your gut and increased your fibre intake from 10 to 50 grams overnight.
So your gut is now dealing with different patterns, timings and fibre amounts on top of the stress response itself.
Instead of trying another non-specific gut reset, I'd first spend a week making your meals, patterns and meal times more predictable with the 7-Day Calmer Gut Structure:
